The children of Cerro Rico: A Future in the Shadow of the Mine

In the imposing Cerro Rico, where history and reality are intertwined with the dust of the mountain, 39 cooperative mines employ more than 15,000 men. Here, mining is not just a job, it is the heartbeat of the city, the reason why everything keeps moving. Without this activity, tourism would decline, banks would lose their purpose and the local economy would be seriously affected. There are no factories, there are no industries, there are no other sources of formal employment. Everything revolves around the mine, a world where the only certainty is the risk and the harshness of the day to day.

A Future Marked by the MINE

For the miners, the work does not end when they leave the depths of Cerro Rico. Outside the mine, their true responsibility awaits them: their children.

AndOn average, each worker has 4 or 5 school-age children, children full of dreams and hopes. However, with only one breadwinner in the household, education becomes a challenge. Finishing high school is an achievement that few achieve, and the idea of entering university to build a different future is almost an unattainable dream. The mine consumes not only the strength of men, but also the opportunities of their families. espite the harshness of this reality, there is an opportunity to change it. The FUNAM Foundation works tirelessly to provide support to the children of miners and improve their educational conditions. Any contribution, no matter how small, can make a big difference in their lives. It is not only about money, but about hope, about opportunities, about the possibility of writing a different story for these children.
